“After a 3.5-hour drive, a roadside chimichanga accompanied by a margarita, and a stand-up comedy special on Netflix, I parked my ass on the bottom bunk of a bunk bed in an Airbnb somewhere in Northern Arizona and closed my eyes.”

Nestled just north of Arizona’s famed White Mountains and somewhere between Snowflake and Show Low resides one of Arizona’s most underrated golf destinations - Birdie Ranch Golf Club.

Aside from the exceptional, year round playing conditions this property provides - there is something even more unique about its location. The golf club is a quick 5 minute jaunt from the Silver Creek Trout Hatchery. And that exact proximity is what got Jordy Barrett, a local golfer and fly fisherman, thinking..

Arizona is one of the few places where you can play 18 holes of championship level golf and fish for one of the oldest waterborne creatures on Earth - the Apache Trout.

Upon speaking with Jordy about this six year old day dream of his, AZ GOLF had to head up north to experience this unique opportunity. To explore, not only the coincidence of a golf course being so close to a fish hatchery, but the intersection of golf and fly fishing..

How two sports, oftentimes categorized as mutually exclusive of one another, are actually much more similar than a leman might think.

That’s how Gol(f)ish was born.

This film served as a cinematic extension of the first person narrative of Jordy Barrett’s experience fly fishing and golfing in the same day as featured in the July 2024 issue of The Arizona Golf Insider. To read Jordy’s recountenance of this once in a lifetime trip, head to azgolf.org.
